I find it curious how a city judges itself sober.  Per capita?

Brian, I just googled "AA meetings in the Milwaukee area" and google came back with 138,000 results. granted that doesn't mean 138,000 meetings, but it does mean they are there......

this article and most of what the author uses as facts means nothing to anyone but her. The meetings that I think she's talking about are AA meetings. Not 12-step recovery programs, or alcohol treatment centers, or drop-in centers. These AA meeting offer no promises, guaranties, they don't ask that you join, only that you be respectful of people who are speaking. They get no funding from anywhere except through their own donations, which pay for coffee, books, pamphlets, chips, and rent, if need be. That is why a lot of meetings are in church basements, because the church believes that AA is a good thing. Someone here said the figures about successes and failures are phony, You're dame right their phony because AA doesn't keep such records. If the AA location book shows that there are 500 meetings taking place in a certain area, it's because the people that go to these 500 meetings keep it alive to pass it along to someone that just might want to listen to someone who's been there and is hoping to help himself and others out by telling their story to others, all by choice.

isn't portland nicknamed beervana? i mean, maybe not officially, but isn't there a major fest of somesort there or something? (a buddy of mine, who lives in boring, or. (semi-close to portland), lists his hometown as beervana, and i know he's not just being shifty, i know it has to do with something that goes on up there, somewhere.)

Extraordinary survey. I lived in Houston for 6 years and those were party hearty times - everyone I knew was into serious drinking, not a teetotaler among them. This entire survey is bizarre - I'm sure that you can find just as many drunks as you could find AA meetings in every town in the US. Personally, I'm not about to give up my cold beer on a summer day or my glass of wine on a cold night - living without alcohol sounds really depressing.
