Recent studies from the University of California, San Diego,  published in the British Journal, NATURE, have discovered a molecule called RANKL, found in aggressive breast cancer cells that predicts more deadly, lethal and life threatening disease.  The findings from these recent studies suggests that drugs that block RANKL may be effective in preventing both the early stages of breast cancer and the advanced progression of the disease.  Research has also shown that Curcumin, the active ingredient in the common spice, Turmeric, has properties that also reduce the expression of these deadly molecules within cancer cells and can potentially slow the spread of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer is not one disease.  There are actually many breast cancers.  When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, the tumor cells in her body must be analyzed in order to understand the nature of her unique disease.   Some cancer cells are more aggressive and fast growing. Some cancer cells are sleepy, slow growing and less dangerous.

Indian food using turmeric will usually use clarified butter (ghee) as the oil, and a variety of herbs such as asafoetida powder, cumin seeds, black mustard and ginger among the seasonings used. The combinations are thousands of years old. I think we can be assured the turmeric used in these recipes is assimilated.

What would really slow down the spread of breast cancer would be the wider publicizing of how breastfeeding reduces the risks. This is where the large organizations do women an injustice with the millions they collect.

Yes, China, I know does have lower breast cancer rates. I don’t know about India.
But other factors come into play with China. It’s not just the turmeric, of course. They have much less dairy, for example. Cow’s milk, specifically, is one of the absolute worst things for breast cancer. And I have always loved it, but I do try to limit it to now to very rare occasions. There’s lots of research on dairy and breast cancer. Plus a book that I would like to get and have heard very good things about, "The No-Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention Program: How One Scientist’s Discovery Helped Her Defeat Her Cancer" by Dr. Jane Plant.

Trails like trails really matter. Here’s is an excellent trail on vitamin d and cancer ."Vitamin D and calcium supplementation reduces cancer risk: results of a randomized trial" http://www.ajcn.org/content/85/6/1586.abstract"……Conclusions: Improving calcium and vitamin D nutritional status substantially reduces all-cancer risk in postmenopausal women. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00352170. "

I’m sure the drug company rep is going to drop that one at your docs’ office with the tickets to the ball game.

The Sloan Kettering web site about botanicals ( About Herbs) is a good resource for information about many supplements and the scientific studies done.

This is a link to their information about turmeric:

Big pharma won’t want that…no money to be made in cheap drugs like herbs or botanicals..

The nations with universal health care are interested in keeping health costs down..maybe they will fund the needed studies

About 75% of people with cancer are taking supplements without the knowledge of their oncologists. No one knows the total effect of these supplements and how can there be any reliable trials of any drugs when so many people are taking so many unregulated supplements?

And yet the US medical industry is touting itself as a scientific model to Japan, India and China with structured trials… but

No one knows what Americans with cancer are taking or the effects…

  15. March 6, 2011 at 8:34 am #

Tumeric is used mostly (daily most likely) in India/China for cooking – Do these countries have a lower than average occurrence of breast cancer? I have also read that it works on Colon cancer as well…….

Neither are in the "top" 26 so both are below Japan’s 8.6 per 100,000 (USA 21.2 per 100k)…...

Well I take 4000 mg of turmeric a day to address a skin disorder, hidradenitis suppurativa. If it has other benefits that’s great.

Trials have been done. Read "The Anti-Cancer Book" for one and many, many others.

  20. March 6, 2011 at 1:56 am #

To answer the question posed in the title…do a trial! do a few trials. That’s the only real way to answer the question.

  21. March 6, 2011 at 12:24 am #

Yes, probably because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties. I’ve read about how it helps with preventing mental decline in several places. Turmeric may reduce the buildup of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s.
India consumes the bulk of the turmeric produced in the world. They have one-third the rate of Alzheimer’s than does the U.S.

I use turmeric instead of warfarin.

Is turmeric becoming a super herb? I have read that it prevents Alzheimer.

The Mayan knew that this Planet had the solution to each and every disease on this planet. But Man has turned away from Herbs and Herbalists and instead turned to the quick and easy Drug cocktails handed to us by the big Drug Companies.
My ex wife was in false labor with my Son back in 1980. The Doctor said the stress on the baby was really bad. He wrote a name and phone number on a piece of paper and a code word. He said that he did not give me that paper, with a wink of course. It was the name and number of a Herbalist. I went and this guy gave me a root to make a tea from. It stunk up the house, but I made the tea and my Ex drank it. LESS than 3 hours later, the false contractions stopped and when we went into the Doctor he said the baby was relaxing with far less stress.
ONLY in California can a Herbalist work their magic and give us the Herbs and Natural Ingredients that Nature intended us to use, instead of the lab created fakes.
Herbalists work on the whole person and not just the paid, not unlike most other countries that have longer life spans than the US.

Dr. Chilkov, this is a great article and it emphasizes the role of many food groups such as spices in preventing and treating common cancers. The Angiogenesis foundation includes turmeric as one of the spices that impact the spread of breast cancer to the lungs and brain. Others include cloves and cinnamon.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is one of the most potent Cancer Fighting Foods. Curcumin, the active ingredient in this common medicinal and culinary herb has been widely studied. It is recognized as a potent cell protectant, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Turmeric has been used for centuries to support cancer patients in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine and Indian Ayurvedic Medicine. Now modern science demonstrates why it works. Curcumin has been shown to influence many cellular factors, including lowering RANKL.

Dr. Nalini, I absolutely love your articles and wish I knew you IRL. You provide such a great service. You’re my hero!
Thanks for the reminder re: turmeric. I’ve been a bit neglectful lately. Not good at all.
    I have read the following:
    * To be assimilated by the body, turmeric must be mixed with black pepper and dissolved in olive, canola, or linseed oil.
    * All of us should regularly consume a soupspoon of turmeric every day, with a generous pinch of pepper and olive oil. You can use it in your salad dressings, cooking, vegetables, and soups. Yet, I’ve also read that because powdered turmeric is a powerful blood-cleansing herb, don’t overdo it.
    * In store-bought curry mixes, turmeric represents only 20% of the total, so it’s better to obtain turmeric directly
    * Research has shown that turmeric in capsules is poorly absorbed by the digestive system.
    * When turmeric is not mixed with pepper or ginger, it does not pass the intestinal barrier. Pepper increases the body’s absorption of turmeric by 2000 percent!
    * Some brands of turmeric powder and supplements have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals themselves. Make sure to obtain a high quality brand.
Thanks again for a great article and for all of the wonderful work you do.
