WASHINGTON — Fifty years after the pill, another birth control revolution may be on the horizon: free contraception for women in the U.S., thanks to the new health care law.
That could start a shift toward more reliable — and expensive — forms of birth control that are gaining acceptance in other developed countries.
But first, look for a fight over social mores.
A panel of experts advising the government meets in November to begin considering what kind of preventive care for women should be covered at no cost to the patient, as required under President Barack Obama's overhaul.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., author of the women's health amendment, says the clear intent was to include family planning.
But is birth control preventive medicine?
Conflicting answers frame what could be the next clash over moral values and a health law that passed only after a difficult compromise restricting the use of public money for abortions.

Are these the same catholic bishops that are part of the catholic church where theres all these reports about bishops and cardinals and so forth getting busted for molesting the choirboys or whatever, and where the headquarters is the Vatican, where kids under 14 get in(to bed) free? That Catholic church? And now they want to lecture other people on sexual practices and social propriety? Knock, knock, 21st centurys here, the halloween costume is good for TODAY only, tomorrow, though, you have to put it back in the closet(along with several members of the clergy, apparently).
Having a safe successful method of birth control available to all saves us from unwanted pregnancies and abortions. When will ones religious beliefs stop interfering with anothers method of birth control? No one really wants abortion; it is a last resort. BUT first we must have more widely available affordable access to birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This reasoning applies to the “morning after” pill as well.
Birth control prevents abortion. Why is this so difficult to understand?
texan by birth, stup!d by choice.
if you cant see the long term benefits of giving women control over their reproductive choices, then youre a no hoper.
The countries with the best health care and thus most widely available sex education and birth control have the lowest number of unwanted pregnancies and fewest abortions (drug users too). Sometimes with public expenditures and social programs, its cheaper to consider preventive maintenance than to stick to your every-man-for-themselves guns. Its cheaper and more humane, kind of a no-brainer. Sick societies are expensive, more so than healthy ones.
So is smoking and getting fat, but we pay to treat emphysema, high blood pressure and diabetes. Everyone should have access to health care and use what they need.
Ive always been pro-choice. Im also very pay for your own choices
contraception is a no no in the catholic church
It would be a much better idea all around for pro-lifers to take into their homes, raise and pay for college for all the babies that would result from measures they approve of, no abortions, no birth control. That should make them happy.
And if you do a study on people with cancer you will find that most of them drank milk as children, that doesnt mean that drinking milk causes cancer.
Actually its been the lefties, tree-hugging, all-natural folks etc that have pushed the idea that pregnancy and birth is not a medical condition to be managed – but a natural healthy human event. And its not an illness – illness by its very nature is a negative thing.
We are.
Funny, the Pro Lifers will cry about this too. I dont see why, this will lower abortions, seems like something theyd approve of, but thats generally not the case.
sthu. ppl like u make all sane texans like me look bad.
Dont want to pay for either. If you tell me I have to pay for their birth control but I get to make them use it – fine — otherwise your argument is bogus.
countries that promote advanced birth-control measures have lower crime rates, less of an income gap between rich and poor and less of a problem with domestic violence. id say that means birth control ends up paying for itself.
***But U.S. Catholic bishops say pregnancy is a healthy condition, not an illness***
And of course, elderly virgins would be the experts in such matters.
Keeping your legs closed is always available and free
You have to want to avoid pregnancy – which many dont – especially welfare recipients. They can walk into any family planning clinic now and get free birth control – they choose not to.
-We should do everything we can to help women who DONT want to get pregnant to avoid it. -
Keeping your legs closed is always risk free, available and costs nothing.
Would you rather pay for their unwanted children? Easy choice.
Free? How dum b are people here?
I dont have any moral objection to it – but having sex or having a baby is an individual choice – we shouldnt be paying for other peoples birth control.
The headline shows the intellectual idiocy of the left – there is nothing for FREE! Somebody is paying for it.
Aint sh|t free people.
so pleased to be your second fan
Yes, there is no free lunch! But youll pay a lot more with no family planning!!!!!
Oh gee —-
This would be a WONDERFUL thing!
Why is this even a question? Providing birth control for low or no cost would save insurance companies a truck-load of money every year. No to mention the fact that it reduces the number of unwanted pregnancies (which would go a long way to reduce the number of abortions…another thing that Catholic bishops seem to be all bent about).
Pregnancy, in the best of circumstances, is physically and emotionally demanding. At worst, it is potentially deadly. We should do everything we can to help women who DONT want to get pregnant to avoid it.
Good. Now let them PAY for Viagra.
Nothing is FREE
believe me youll pay for it one way or the other.
