One in five American adults has experienced mental illness in the last year, according to a new government report, with mental illness being more than twice as high among younger adults (ages 18 to 25) than older adults (age 50 and older).
The report, conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), showed that 29.9 percent of 18- to 25-year-olds experienced mental illness in the last year, compared with 14.3 percent of people age 50 and older.
In addition, women were more likely to have experienced mental illness than men in the last year, with 23 percent of women reporting mental illness compared with 16.8 percent of men.
SAMHSA defined mental illness as having diagnosable disorder that is based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).

The medication which have came out in the last 20 years to treat mental illnesses are a god sent if there was a god. More lives have been saved and set right by these medications that you scam story can account for.

Actually you are quite right on all of these. The DSM V will also remove a lot of conditions or merge certain conditions that were once considered singular from other disorders. I don’t think there is a good standard for normal. Maybe we’re all on one side or the other of neurotic!

Being depressed or down about exterior pressure is a normal response.
Being clinically depressed is not.THe way a friend who has battled depression her whole life described it was that when she waws happy and married and in a beautiful home with plenty of money she was really depressed and realized that something was not right…it wasn’t the externals it was a chemicalimbalance.
If you look at the people on the DSM-IV TR task force who define "mental illness" for the rest of us, you will find that almost to a man (yeah, well, they are mostly men) they are MD’s with a heavy pharmacology background and some with blatant ties to Big Pharma. They have, shall we say, a particular interest in setting the bar for mental illness at a level that will continue to drive revenue. ‘Nuff said.

Substance abuse is a very large problem. I currently work as a substance abuse counselor helping people discover new pathways towards progress. I don’t know how I feel about the article but I do now that mental illness is not a debilitating disease.
