Hanneke Hops wasn't afraid of dying. What concerned her was growing old and not being able to run marathons, ride horses, or fly planes. So the 56-year-old Hayward, California, woman turned to Alan Mintz, M.D. -- a radiologist who founded the Cenegenics Medical Institute in Las Vegas, which specializes in "age management medicine."

She was prescribed recombinant human growth hormone (HGH), a synthetic version of a pituitary hormone hawked as a miraculous fountain of youth. Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that taking HGH poses serious health risks, Hops -- unaware there was any harm -- began injecting it into her thigh six times a week.

She never did grow old. Six months later, in 2004, she was dead, her liver full of malignant tumors. While it is impossible to prove that HGH therapy contributed to Hops's death, the use of HGH has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. (Mintz said at the time of Hops's death that Hops would not have been treated if he knew she had cancer.)

Today, thousands of physicians are catering to the 78 million baby boomers who are hoping to feel younger, longer -- and willing to pay for the privilege. The anti-aging industry is expected to gross more than $291 billion worldwide by 2015.

Moderate drinking and exercise appear to slow down the health deterioration that occurs with aging, according to a recent study. About 2,500 people aged 65 and older were followed regularly since 1994. Those who drank and exercised regularly had fewer difficulties with their daily activities and physical functioning.

I’m on the young side of the baby boomers … 56…and I can tell you that my generation has money to burn and this will be a great business to get into…anything that has to do with wrinkles or slowing the age processes will be a money maker.

I prefer to have the Gov stay out of my business and let me make the choices for what is best for me. The FDA recently has attacked the vitamin industry, an industry that I love. What they have done with the new regulation is to set us back 30 years. NO new vitamins can come to the industry without fda approval. This means only the big boys can manage it. WE already don’t like or trust the big boys. I’m all for the small company finding the new vitamin and minerals. The scientists are phenomenal and don’t need the fda involved. I find it all very sad that we as adults can’t make our own decisions because as soon as an industry becomes a billion dollar industry the Gov jumps in and hands it over to the big boys. Screw them all! I’m so sick of their lies and abuse.

Give it a little bit of time. Big things are on the horizon.

B-b-b-b-b-b-but media told me that testosterone will poison a man’s body and eat my children!

  18. August 20, 2011 at 12:29 pm #

    It’s not fake(maybe airbrushed?).

You’ve never seen Dr. Life before?

  19. August 20, 2011 at 12:28 pm #

Yeah, right, like extra testosterone and HGH aren’t a critical part of the equation. /sarcasm

  20. August 20, 2011 at 12:28 pm #

Face it. You get old. You die. I haven’t seen anyone beat those odds.

  21. August 20, 2011 at 12:26 pm #

Anti-aging industry. What a joke. Another money making scam like the man-made climate change industry.

  22. August 20, 2011 at 12:17 pm #

I wouldn’t bet my day job on it, boomers don’t have the cash that seniors had in the days of old.

  23. August 20, 2011 at 12:07 pm #

Getting old is not for wimps! Had I known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself! (Thanks David Crosby for the saying)

  24. August 20, 2011 at 12:06 pm #

You want to live longer, quit worrying that you are getting old! Its going to happen, no matter what you do, and worry will get you there faster, than ignoring it! Get used to seeing grey hair (platinum blond) and enjoy your new body, and find some one who enjoys it too! If we were meant to look 21, all our life’s, life would be very boring!! Keep curious about every thing as education only stops, when they put you in the box,and there is so much to learn, to make yourself a better person, and maybe educate those around you,as your wisdom far exceeds any younger persons rantings and pronouncements! Be grateful for the small wonders around you, and the big things will take care of them self’s! Smile through the pain, and tell people what you think, because you can! The only thing you were promised, when you came into this world, is that you have to leave it, and its what you accomplish in the in between, that counts! And in the end, just do what YOU want, until you cant do it no more!! Go for it!!

To prevent speedy aging of face and skin is not to burn your skin to dark brown every summer. Feed your body with quality food, don’t be afraid to be hungry once a while, don’t overeat, don’t drink alcohol on regular bases, dance and walk regularly, love and be loved, be nice, optimistic and happy, have some hobby… and it will reward you in your latter years.

Hormone replacement doesn’t add years to your life. It is the exercising and changing your diet that does.

  27. August 20, 2011 at 11:58 am #

I have to chuckle at all the anti aging skin products being advertised by models who do not have any business having wrinkles at this time of their lives. If these products worked why did Helena Rubenstein and Mary Kay, looked like hags in their old age? If you want a "Peau Magnifique" you must stay out of the sun and not smoke.

  28. August 20, 2011 at 11:57 am #

I find that fake airbrushed photo Ad hillarious . Whats the use of having a body and abs like that jersey shore idiot if you face is stll of that of a balding old man?

  29. August 20, 2011 at 11:38 am #

Eat a good diet, exercise, don’t smoke.  Good advice.  But you need to slow the aging process.  For most men, that requires testosterone supplementation.
