Thanks for proving oil patch's comment so quickly. Strawberry farmers are not-for-profit farmer aren't they? ( Profits = Greed, especially when I am not making them.)

There has not been one well in which contamination from the underground fraccing was demonstrated to have lead to contamination of the water supply. Even the EPA has acknowledged that. The motive of the fracking industry is profits, not environmentally safe procedures. The carcinogenic chemicals used in fracking fluids along with millions of gallons of diesel fuel & water pumped into the ground to extract gas is a risk and waste that shouldn’t be allowed; IF the industry develops proven safe methods of extraction and disposal of waste that doesn’t have the potential for poisoning our precious water then perhaps, but only a ban on current potentially catastrophic methods will stimulate that quest; industry will use the cheapest, most dangerous methods until forced to change. The rendering unsafe for any purpose of millions of gallons of water in a water-scarce environment should be banned; the priceless value of water that is the basis for all life on earth, should be recognized and weighed against the supposed current “value” ( a piece of paper vs life-sustaining water) of the gas extracted; the scales are NOT evenly set! The history and trail of pollution and destruction of other people’s wells, agricultural lands, property values, and health already committed by the fracking “industry” proves their lack of concern for anything other than profits; it also shows the utter failure of government to protect either our priceless water or the rights of people who have become victims of greed. The bottom-line is, do we allow those whose primary concern/focus is private short-term profits to threaten the well being/safety/health and future of millions by poisoning our water?

why would anyone drink fac fluid?

The people of the Monterey Bay region don't want this. We've built our economy on tourism, green construction, small businesses, and specialty agriculture. This isn't something we need and it will only happen when outside interests take away our own say. Water is our main concern here, not Oil.

The real issue here is that central coastal California struggles to have enough water as it is. Furthermore, this is one of the most beautiful and easily accessible coastal ranges in the country. The people who live here don't want it, the movement towards sustainability is in full force out here and we're building our economy on it.

This article like all liberal anti-science / progressive has zero facts about the engineering practice known as hydraulic fracturing. Not to mention that the oil and gas company has been fracking in california for over 60 years and strawberries are doing just fine.

Fracking uses large amounts of water that should be used for agriculture among other things.. why should we have millions of gallons of water which is polluted with toxic chemicals pumped underground in agricultural regions or regions that hold aquafers that we don't want polluted. Add to that an.increase in seismic activity, that's right earth quakes where this water is pumped underground at high pressure and then fracturing the ground undernrath the surface in order to yeild the products and anyone with common sense can see its not worth it. And after they take what they want do you think they could clean it up? Right..
