It's no secret that insomnia or lack of sleep can have serious consequences, including poor concentration and short-term memory loss. But studies show that blacks may be disproportionately affected by these health risks and prone to long-term effects of poor sleeping habits. Several studies have found that African Americans sleep fewer hours, experience more frequent interruptions in their sleep, and are more likely to take medications for sleep, The St. Louis American reports. According to a 2010 National Sleep Foundation study, blacks reported the least amount of sleep and the busiest bedtime routines. The study found that 17 percent of African Americans are more likely than whites (9 percent) and Hispanics (13 percent) to do job-related work in the hour before bed. Additionally, blacks reported losing sleep every night over financial and employment concerns at a higher rate than whites. However, blacks said they need less sleep in comparison to whites, Hispanics and Asians to perform at their best during the day.

Here we go again with the…. "studies show that blacks may be disproportionately study"….…who’s doing these studies?

As for Rick Ross and the seizures...Yes, the seizures happen when you’re sleep deprived...but that’s just one symptom of the seizures, not the origin or the cause. Lack of sleep is not the main cause of seizures, is what I’m trying to say.

These racists commenters are probably the same ones who expect black people to support them in their gay rights propaganda. Won’t do it…even if some of the ‘gays’ are people of color…lie down with dogs, get up with fleas.

I am a black woman, but having lived most of my life in environments that were roughly 98.5% white, I can honestly say, from my own observations, that poorer people, regardless of race, must live and function under conditions that are not conducive to the proper amount of sleep and this includes children. My poor white grade school classmates would frequently nod off in class, for which they were often unfairly scolded and chastised. I attributed their drowsiness to their awful living conditions and poor diet.

I get what you’re saying and wish that it was always true. Just when my American patriotic juices start flowing, something or someone will always remind me that I’m not an "American" on a equal par with them, even though there have been no "Africans" in my family since at least the eighteenth century. If you are intelligent, well-educated, articulate, and black, you can’t be a "real" American–-I mean, look at the attitude of "birthers" toward President Obama who insist, despite all evidence to the contrary, that he is not a ‘real" American.

This article is crazy. I work in a pharmacy and as far as sleep aids go 9 out of 10 patients coming to purchase ambien, temazepam, or lunesta are white people who are already taking xanax or adderall.

You can read these studies to be less "ethnically" related, than that of economic class. Poor people’s lives suck, OK? This is yet another way in which they suck. And there are more poor "ethnic" people than white ones. There. The dots are now connected for you.

Do the tips to prevent insomnia also pertain to White folks as well? Or do we have our own set of tips? I mean since this is clearly a rasicts study, are there tips for White People as well?? Oops, I’n not white, I’m uumm, an Irish American, no, I think I am an English American,...no…don’t think so, maybe I am an American American..…no, thats not good, we all have to have lables now..hmmm, I don’t know what I am…dammit, I wonder if Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton knows what I am, they seem to like to talk about hatred toward anyone other their selves. Hmm, ok, I’ll just be me I guess. Oh wait, I can’t find my weiner, yup, I’m all White Boy!
