Football and commercials aside, the  -- collectively we'll eat some 11 million pounds of chips and 1.25 billion chicken wings on Sunday alone.

Altogether, those potato skins, pizza slices, beer and more give Super Bowl Sunday the dubious distinction of being among the highest calorie consumption days nation-wide, second only to the way we stuff ourselves on Thanksgiving.

Think you couldn't possibly be eating that much? The reality is that portion sizes have grown tremendously over the past 20 years. And that's assuming you can even spot a real portion size -- take our quiz to test your skill. And remember that just one serving of each of these items will tally up to more than 1,800 calories, so nosh in moderation

Want some cheap snacks that are good for you, go to a Big Lots or other discount store and look around in their snack sections for brands you probably never heard of which will write the healthy details on their front cover like "more fiber or Omega 3 or high protein or vitamins" and the reason they are there is because nobody bought them at your grocery store that has them at higher prices. Also if you like popcorn get an air popper and make your own, those air poppers we used 30 years ago remember? You can control what goes on it then, type of butter with less sat fats, also use "light salt" that has half the sodium replaced by potassium which you need more of per day anyway (USA has major potassium malnutrition I heard, eat your bananas and beans).

Exactly. An article on here a couple of weeks ago said that the US population eats on average over 3750 calories a day. Some of us just spent three weeks "resolving" to eat better after three months of Hallmark-induced gorging and now there’s the Super Bowl, Valentine’s, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and so on into the next three months. With an increase in obesity and diet-related diseases, we’re obviously not eating healthily for the majority of the year.

The problem is that many many eat like this every day.

I don’t really care. We eat sensibly 99% of the time, but we take "holidays" a few times a year and Super Bowl Sunday is one. Supper that night will be snacks in front of the TV. Next day, back to normally sensible eating. I get so TIRED of this constant carping from the self-proclaimed "nutrition gods"…..like if you eat this stuff ONCE in a blue moon, you are doomed forever.

Was anyone actually shocked about the number of calories in the food choices here? No news here.

How about quit being a whimp and eat up. If you want just go hard core cardio at 3-4 and build up an appetite.
