We all know the basics of good oral care: brush in the morning and evening, floss each day and visit the dentist twice per year. But there are smaller, incremental steps we can take to guarantee good health, including the food we eat each day. Nutrition is important for every cell in our bodies -- and that naturally extends to teeth and gums. In particular, food choices feed the mouth's live-in nemesis: plaque-causing bacteria, according to an explainer from the Yale School of Medicine. They wrote:

When you drink and munch starchy or sugary foods, you're not only feeding yourself, you're feeding the plaque that can cause havoc in your mouth ... When sugars or starches in your mouth come in contact with plaque, the acids that result can attack teeth for 20 minutes or more after you finish eating. Repeated attacks can break down the hard enamel on the surface of teeth, leading to tooth decay. Plaque also produces toxins that attack the gums and bone supporting the teeth.

Nowhere in the review does the NRC say that fluoride is good at levels people receive. Quite the contrary.

Define "vast majority". Water fluoridation is a medical intervention, so even if a small number of people are being harmed, the program is extremely unethical. And the evidence shows that a lot of people are being harmed. 11% of the population has iodine deficiency. 5% of the population has a thyroid disorder. How many people have arthritis? Fluoride causes arthritis.

yes I know that plasma levels are different. Stop making silly, straw-man arguments.

if you would bother to read the NRC review, you would notice that diabetes/insulin tolerance are worsened by intake of 0.07mg/kg/day, a dosage exceeded by some people from fluoridated water ALONE. And of course, fluoridated water is NOT THE ONLY SOURCE OF FLUORIDE. When all sources are considered, about 20% of children are receiving doses in excess of 0.07mg/kg/day (Data from the Iowa fluoride study).

    Go read the science. Sheesh.

Did you think “plasma fluoride concentrations of about 0.1 mg/L“ means `drinking water levels of .1 mg/L"?

As I said – you don’t understand the issue enough to be able to draw conclusions. Perhaps you should take the NRC’s advice: fluoride is good at the levels we currently receive, and the vast majority of the population is safe.

Fluoride is good for you at the levels most people receive.

When you start self-medicating, you`re going to get into problems. I suggest you talk to your doctor.

Too much fluoride is definitely a problem.
Similar to how too much of anything – even too many vitamins – can cause damage. However, most people don’t have to worry about that.

The key is to be aware of what you’re putting in your body, and keep up with research.

What about cultures that have no decay issues? Perhaps following a diet high in magnesium and other naturally obtained minerals would be preferable to using industrial waste to strengthen teeth. Please see the comment from the other reply to this posting.

Agreed. I’m on the Paleo diet and feeling much better. Did you try magnesium supplements for your son? Wonder if topical mag rinse would help. Also, green & black teas make me woozy. Come to finally figure out that I probably have a P450 PYC3A4 anomaly. Could be something in that P450 enzyme family for your son. Wikipedia has some info.

Natural Flouride exists in green and black teas. I drink upwards to 4 cups daily. I am finding other researches in the past that having too much flouride in the body does create toxcities. It is hard to know what is safe at how much. I don’t like the idea of using mined materials being used as treatments as it is unnatural sources that can create health issues. After a while, it does create illnesses when too much is ingested. I can remember back when my son was age 4 being given flouride tablets to prevent cavities. He is now 29 yo and has weak teeth that are fracturing and breaking down. I regret giving it to him. I did not know then and am appreciative that things are coming out on the net and media what is causing health issues. I continue to learn more and more daily in my researches. I believe a return to ancient diets will be most beneficial to all. We do not need artificial stuff in our diets.

A point to my wife, the one with the expensive teeth: Ice didn’t seem be included on this list, did it?

Good article…..bottom line is avoid sugar, its one of the worst if not the worst food people can consume. It wreaks havoc on the body and is extremely addictive. Its something the body has no use or need for, yet we stuff ourselves on it.

  12. February 17, 2012 at 8:44 pm #

Terrific post. I would add that taking iodine (in the form of Lugol’s) and ensuring enough magnesium in the diet are a good start for those of us who have been exposed to fluoride during our lives, and especially for those of us with mercury constantly draining into our bodies from the fillings our dentists thought were a great idea.

  13. February 17, 2012 at 8:40 pm #

A recommendation to drink as much fluoride as possible, brought to you by the people who still think it’s a good idea to put mercury in our teeth.

Chris Bryson is a reputable journalist. He has done more research on water fluoridation than anyone else in recent times. His book does an excellent job exposing the fluoride scam for what it is.

Cavities vs. fluorosis is a false choice. Further the scientific research (e.g. the Iowa FLuoride Study, see Warren et al 2009) shows that cavity prevention from ingested fluoride requires the same dosage that causes fluorosis. They are not separable by dosage.

Cavities are easily prevented with vitamin K2 + vitamin D.

You have been sold a lie about fluoride.

The NRC’s scientific review of fluoride:

  18. February 17, 2012 at 6:39 pm #

NRC= National Research Council. Ever heard of them?

These are the scientific FACTS about fluoride. This is not conspiracy nonsense, though water fluoridation was sold in the 1950s by a conspiracy of industrial polluters and military interests.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

  19. February 17, 2012 at 6:12 pm #

    Incorrect on all accounts.

I bet you believe 9/11 was an inside job, that the government uses chemtrails to control the population, that the moonlanding was fake, that climate change isn’t real…..

Oh, the world we live in…

Due to children under the age of 4 (not 6) are especially susceptible to dental fluorosis.

The important thing to keep in mind is if you have a choice between your child having dental fluorosis, or cavities, you’re going to pick dental fluorosis every time.

One cautionary point on the Xylitol sweetened gum is that while it is healthy and beneficial for humans it is lethal for animals. Enjoy your gum and other Xylitol sweetened items, but ensure it is not kept in places where pets can get at it and ensure that used gum is disposed of so pets are unable to eat it.

Fluoride is an anti-cavity agent only when used topically, not systemically. I read recently that some medical associations are advising against allowing children under the age of 6 or 7 to drink tap water because of fluoridation. Also, isn’t fluoride equivalent to Prozac? Both products are thought to calcify the pineal gland and render the consumer docile.

Fluoride is especially toxic to those with iodine deficiency. Here is another quote from the NRC review. The NRC also expresses concern about the effect of fluoride on IQ in children:

"In humans, effects on thyroid function were associ- ated with fluoride exposures of 0.05-0.13 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was adequate and 0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was inadequate (Table 8-2).
…the inverse correlation between asymptomatic hypothyroidism in pregnant mothers and the IQ of the offspring (Klein et al. 2001) is a cause for concern. The recent decline in iodine intake in the United States (CDC 2002d; Larsen et al. 2002) could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals."

  28. February 17, 2012 at 2:37 pm #

Here is a quote from the National research Council’s 2006 report on fluoride toxicity. The fluoride dosage that causes impaired glucose tolerance is 0.07mg/kg/day, a dosage received by up to about 20% of the population.

"The conclusion from the available studies is that sufficient fluo- ride exposure appears to bring about increases in blood glucose or impaired glucose tolerance in some individuals and to increase the severity of some types of diabetes. In general, impaired glucose metabolism appears to be associated with serum or plasma fluoride concentrations of about 0.1 mg/L or greater in both animals and humans (Rigalli et al. 1990, 1995; Trivedi et al. 1993; de al Sota et al. 1997). In addition, diabetic individuals will often have higher than normal water intake, and consequently, will have higher than normal fluoride intake for a given concentration of fluoride in drinking water. An estimated 16-20 million people in the United States have diabetes mellitus ; therefore, any role of fluoride exposure in the development of impaired glucose metabolism or diabetes is potentially significant."

Wow I am floored by the ignorance and misinformation in this article. HuffPost health has hit a new low.

Fluoridated water does NOT prevent tooth decay or "remineralize" teeth. Fluoride works TOPICALLY, when it is applied directly to the teeth. Fluoride is a poison. It poisons bacteria that cause tooth decay. Fluoride is also poisonous to humans, so it is not a safe substance. In doses received from fluoridated water, fluoride damages the thyroid gland, causes hypothyroidism and diabetes.

See http://www.fluoridefreeNRV.org for more information on the dangers of fluoride.

NONE of these foods, except cheese, has any effect on dental health. And the reasons given for cheese being beneficial are completely wrong. Cheese is effective for preventing tooth decay because it is a rich source of vitamin K2-a critical nutrient for preventing cavities. Vitamin K2 deficiency is the primary reason for tooth decay, and it isnt even mentioned in this crappy article.

See this book for more information on vitamin K2:
    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=vitamin+k2+and+the+calcium+paradox&sprefix=vitamin+k2%2Caps%2C242

The cure for tooth decay was discovered decades ago by Dr Weston Price DDS: vitamin K2, vitamin D and a mineral-rich diet. Dr Price cured and healed cavities using these natural substances.

Of course, the dental industry doesnt want their customers to know about that discovery.

To the sugarless gum chewers: Please beware that the stickiness of chewing gum may loosen dental work, including: crowns, veneers, bridges, implants, inlays and onlays…
