A study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reveals that a single glass of milk can contain traces of 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones. Although the doses of the drugs were too small to have any affects on milk drinkers, the mere existence of so many different types offers a window into milk production across the food chain. The researchers analyzed 20 types of cow's, goat's and sheep's milk purchased in Spain and Morocco; the highest quantity of medicine was found in cow's milk.
Some of the chemicals found included niflumic acid (painkiller), florfenicol (antibiotic) and 17a-ethinylestradiol (steroid hormone). Click here to see the list of the other chemicals found.

Why don’t you go find another thread in which to write your "libs" babble and incoherent sentences.
Alice Redley is a smart person to buy locally and care about what’s in the food she eats .. go have another twinkle and rant somewhere else ..

With all the unemployment, it is surprising to me that there are so many health police testing every conceivable food, clothing, dyes, fuels, soles of shoes, toilet seats and bowls, faucets, underwear old and new, for chemicals. Everything in the world including the body is composed of chemicals and the entirely ignorant american school graduate in anything chemical except drugs has no idea what to do with the flood of data proven or not, dangerous or not, avoidable cerainly NOT.

Great example Hazel…
This farm was selling milk ILLEGALLY hence there was no state oversight or testing of their product.
Furthermore, apples to oranges as this has no relevancy to this article. E. coli is another matter altogether and completely off topic. But since you mention it, why not include ALL of the factory farms who’ve had outbreaks of e.coli?
13 hours ago (8:21 PM)
Sounds like they were selling it on the sly, illegally.
Here in California, the milk is regulated and tested. It is a legal, safe product.

I wonder how many people really "knew" this farmer:

That’s true. But, if you’re going to drink milk, you’re better off going organic. I don’t drink much milk (a little bit in my coffee), so it’s not a huge issue for me.
I will say that I don’t drink tap water. It smells and give me the creeps.
16 hours ago (5:16 PM)
Organic milk will cut down on the drugs given directly to the animal, but a good number of the drugs they’re finding are for human use, which means the cows are likely picking them up because we’ve contaminated water sources with our (human) drugs. It winds up in streams and other ground water, and then in drinking water and to some extent taken up by plants.
Pretty effing scary.

It legal in only 20 states.
16 hours ago (5:48 PM)
Raw milk is readily available nationwide. All that is required is a willing Grade A dairy operator with a milk cooling tank where the milk is held until picked up by the truck from the local dairy/processor who looks the other way when people drive up to his milking parlor and "steal" milk from the sampling tap. No law requires him to put his person at risk to stop someone stealing two or three dollars worth of milk. They can then pay for it the next time they meet him in town. Common practice all over the country.
16 hours ago (5:40 PM)
It is not "illegal" and can be purchased "legally" directly from the farm in many states. Furthermore, this article has nothing to do with "pasteurization". In fact, "organic" raw milk has none of these issues.
16 hours ago (5:16 PM)
Raw milk is readily available in California grocery stores. It is legal here.
16 hours ago (5:14 PM)
Did the farmer pasteurize the milk? It is illegal to sell raw milk.

But I’ve also lived in Louisville, KY, Dallas, TX, Washington DC and a dozen other towns. I’ve never had trouble finding a local farmer (within 30 miles). If you look around, most towns have a farmer’s market. These things are available to anyone who seeks them out.
I recommend http://www.localharvest.org/.
Oh, thanks for judging me by where I live. That’s so unbiased and kind of you. *eyeroll*

Where do you live lady, have you tested organics. They are not so clean after all but the price is all. Do you local cows in your neighborhood, any farmers, would you know what they feed them or med them. Gross – foolish badger comment. Malibu – California, should have known
18 hours ago (4:07 PM)
Gross. Buy (if you can) local milk. Know your farmer!!
If you can’t do that, please buy organic milk.
16 hours ago (5:43 PM)
U.S. milk has similar issues unless it is from a truly organic source (NOT Horizon).

Was all of the milk purchased in Spain And Morocco? The article is not clear. We need more facts.

You keep repeating this garbage. Where are you really from and whom do you represent?
16 hours ago (5:37 PM)
Are you ‘really’ that naive about what goes into milk in the good ol’ U.S.A? Or is this willful ignorance?

Nothing to be concerned about unless you live in Spain or Morocco. Thats where the milk was purchased.

makes me feel like my choice to swap out milk for beer wasn’t so crazy after all.

So if I write an article entitled "Pesticides All Over Typical Tomato" and it turns out the tomatoes tested were actually tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots in the Czech Republic and Cameroon, you would be fine with that because you’re sure there are pesticides on tomatoes in the U.S. too?
16 hours ago (5:39 PM)
If anything it will be found to be much worse in the US due to the fact that farm products have been turned in to industrial commodities. A good example was when Monsanto threatened to sue any dairy that advertised their milk was free of Monsanto’s BGH which they falsely claimed was a natural substance as they were pushing all dairy operations to use it. Antibiotics are used as a matter of course in the dairy industry rather than as a treatment when needed too.

I believe it is *different* in the USA. Don’t you think "typical glass of milk" is a bit misleading considering it refers to sheep, goat, and cow milk from two distant foreign countries?
17 hours ago (4:48 PM)
Do you truly believe it is *better* in the USA??? This article is not news. Our milk is tainted with antibiotics, growth hormones, estrogens, etc….. same thing.
17 hours ago (4:42 PM)
This article is VERY misleading. The tests were done with milk purchases in Spain and Morocco! NOT in the UK or the USA!
17 hours ago (4:43 PM)
OK, that’s not good, but how do such medicines meant for humans get into milk? Through their drinking water?
