You shouldn't stop exercising during the summer months, just because the mercury has jumped to uncomfortable heights. But you should take precautions to protect yourself against heat-related illness.
The American Council on Exercise offers these guidelines:

 • Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.

 • Don't exercise as vigorously as you normally do, especially during the first few days of hotter weather.

• Pay attention to factors other than temperature, including humidity.

• Exercise early in the morning or late in the evening, to beat the hottest temperatures.

• Wear lightweight clothing that fits loosely.

• Listen to your body and take a rest when you need it.

Working out isn't only about how you'll look in that bikini. Getting — and staying — in shape boosts heart health, helps your skin and improves your sleep, to mention just a few of the healthy perks.

And just last week, we added another motivation to the list, when a new study linked jogging to increased life expectancy. Researchers from the Copenhagen City Heart Study found that jogging one to two-and-a-half hours a week in two or three different sessions was associated with an additional 6.2 years for men and 5.6 years for women.

The healthier the body, the healthier the mind; and the healthier the mind, the better you will do at work, and the more your boss will reward you. So listen up!

When our careers take over, one of the first things we sacrifice is our health. We have a hard time focusing on too many things at once, so when we need to work late and push through difficult and demanding months on the job, we tend to neglect some very important health habits that will help us sustain a demanding schedule.

Consider this a friendly reminder to get yourself back on track. The healthier the body, the healthier the mind; and the healthier the mind, the better you will do at work, and the more your boss will reward you. So listen up — some of these changes in your daily routine are easy, and you can start them now.

10. You think you're too tired from work to work out. If you're not getting at least 30 to 40 minutes of cardio activity at least three days a week, you're not doing your body any favors. Research shows that regular exercise improves your immune system, lifts your mood, and gives you more energy throughout the day. So when your work life gets really hectic, this is actually the time you want to exercise more to prevent getting sick when you just don't have time to be missing work.

What's the first thing you do when you wake up?

Dr. Robert Oexman, director of the Sleep to Live Institute, told HuffPost Healthy Living that your answer should be "Stretch my back!"

"The greatest incidence of slipped discs occurs within 30 to 60 minutes after we wake up," he says. "That's because we get out of bed and immediately hit the ground running."

Researchers have found that antioxidant-rich watercress can alleviate the natural stress put on our body by a workout. And they found that participants with no watercress in their system who ate the leafy vegetable just two hours before high level exercise still experienced the same level of protection.

Though regular moderate exercise is known to be good for us, the increased demand on our bodies can cause damage to our DNA.
According to a new study from scientists at Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Ulster, eating watercress can prevent some of the damage caused by high intensity exercise and help maximise the benefits of a tough workout.

The study findings have now been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Our world is saturated with advice about health and fitness. It is hurled at us from every direction – from sources that are clearly suspect (infomercials, fashion magazines and my "stylist") to those that are meant to have more heft, legitimacy and influence (health care providers, scientists and even government). Given that about 60% of us are overweight and almost none of us workout regularly or eat a healthy diet, it is no surprise we – both individuals and society – are looking for simple answers.

But here is the reality: Most health advice is either total baloney or, from a bang-for-your-buck perspective, pretty useless. We have long known the key steps to a healthy lifestyle – real exercise, real food, cutting calories – and they have little in common with all the noise emanating from the health industry. Indeed, despite the emergence of more and more relevant and reliable research, health and fitness myths have remarkable staying power. And new ones are emerging all the time.

In the hope of getting to the basic truth about the best way to optimize health, I have spent several years immersed in the world of health and fitness. What I found was a sea of myths and misinformation. Here are a few of my favorites:

Can the sassy, foul-mouthed, hectoring tone that prompted millions of women to buy “Skinny Bitch” work for men?

The authors and publisher believe that the tough-love message of the original book will translate to men who want to lose weight and “get ripped.” Running Press, a division of Perseus Books, has planned an initial print run of 100,000 copies.

“Skinny Bitch,” with maxims like “sugar is the Devil” and “soda is liquid Satan,” has spent a total of 92 weeks on The New York Times Advice, How-To and Miscellaneous Paperback Best-Seller list, and has sold 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks about 70 percent of sales. The authors have also written a recipe book, “Skinny Bitch in the Kitch,” which sold a healthy 217,000 copies, and a book for pregnant mothers, “Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven,” which has sold only 26,000 copies.

All man! Zac Efron shows off his bulging biceps and muscular physique on the cover of Men's Health magazine

He's come a long way from the little boy who first hit our screens in Disney Channel movie High School Musical back in 2006.

And now Zac Efron is showing off his incredibly muscular physique on the cover of Men's Health magazine, after bulking up for his role in upcoming movie The Lucky One. The 24-year-old actor is seen flaunting his bulging biceps in a khaki short-sleeved T-shirt, with his hand resting in the back pocket of his jeans.

Zac is seen smouldering at the camera with a hint of stubble on his face in the sexy cover shot. While Zac has always been in good shape, he had to bulk up significantly to play U.S. Marine Logan Thibault in the film, a big-screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' book. Talking about his workout regime ahead of the movie, Zac said: 'Physically I started eating a lot. Eating through walls. Just eating and eating. That's all I'd do and I put on some weight that way. As far as the training goes, just trying different techniques and methods.

Robert "Bob" Kennedy, the man behind the Canadian-based publisher of popular health books and fitness magazines including "Oxygen," `'MuscleMag" and "American Curves," has died. He was 73.

Kennedy died Thursday of complications from cancer at his home in Caledon Hills, Ontario, north of Toronto, Publicist Silvie Bordeaux said Friday.

Kennedy, who founded Robert Kennedy Publishing, began his fitness-based business empire in a 1972 venture when he sold nutrition, bodybuilding and fitness instruction courses through the mail.

He launched his first magazine, "MuscleMag International," in 1974 and started a fitness franchise with stores and a clothing line in the 1990s. He also wrote several books, including the best-selling "Hardcore Bodybuilding."

He was married to Tosca Reno, who wrote the best-selling "Eat-Clean Diet" series, produced by Kennedy's publishing house.

"He showed me how to live my life as one filled with possibilities. Through him I became what I am today, a story that is familiar to many others who have been touched by Bob's generous, warm and colorful spirit," his wife wrote on her personal blog Friday.

One is a memoir about an elite ultra-marathoner and adventurer who detested running when he started, while the other is a step-by-step healthy living guide.

Marshall Ulrich's fast-paced Running on Empty covers lots of ground, from his struggle with heartbreak and bad health to his makeover into one of the world's toughest elite athletes. In this 2011 memoir (reprinted in paperback this month), Ulrich shows he feels most alive when he's pushing himself to the limit. Based on his track record, he feels alive often.

When his wife was dying of breast cancer in 1980, his blood pressure started to soar and he began to worry about his own mortality. He was only 29. His doctor and his brother told him to start exercising. He put on a pair of Converse sneakers and headed out the door.

"I wondered why the hell any adult would run if he didn't have to," he writes. "I didn't like the feeling of gasping for air, my leg muscles straining, my feet slapping the pavement."

Here is the eating and drinking plan that will help you obtain each of your fitness goals.

Anyone that has tried to lose weight knows there’s more to dropping pounds than merely getting regular exercise. You can actually use nutrition to influence your weight loss by consuming certain foods before, during, and after exercise to improve your chances of shedding excess weight. Following these fitness nutrition tips can make all the difference in the world to your fitness goals.

It is possible to begin losing weight without changing your eating habits by adding physical exercise; however exercising will increase weight loss. Increased physical activity has many benefits: increased blood flow to all parts of the body, increased oxygen supply and waste products are removed through perspiration. You also change your body’s flexibility, strength, endurance, and cardiovascular health.

Exercise also helps to raise your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which is desirable.

It helps regulate blood sugar levels and convert stored fat into sugars that can be used to provide energy for the body. There’s no doubt about it, getting regular exercise is important in trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Usually, most of us do not understand the proper nutrients needed by our body. One of the most important nutrients which we fail to intake regularly is. Protein provides food to our muscles to make it strong and to build more endurance and stamina for the body. Because of different types of eating habits, we may often experience various types of healthy problems due to the lack of protein in our system. Some may also experience muscle loss because of this. On the other hand, a lot of protein supplements are available in the market nowadays. People now have various ways on how to increase the protein supply in their body. One of these efforts is the use of nutrition protein shakes.

Nutrition protein shakes are currently the most important supplement there is.

Frequent heading of a soccer ball isn’t good for your brain, but it’s not all bad news for participants of the world’s most popular sport: Soccer players are significantly smarter than, well, pretty much everyone, according to a new study in PLoS ONE.

When professional soccer players were tested on “executive function”—a key aspect in memory, multitasking, and creativity—they scored significantly higher than the general population. In fact, elite players belonged to the best 2 to 5 percent of the total population, says Predrag Petrovic, Ph.D., the lead researcher and professor at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Three hours of vigorous exercise a week can reduce a man’s heart attack risk by 22 percent, a new study suggests.

The Harvard School of Public Health researchers also found that about 38 percent of that decreased risk was due to the beneficial effects of exercise on a man’s levels of “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

The findings were published Oct. 4 the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

There are ways for you to cure pain through exercising, and this here is a list of them.

There's a medical phenomenon doctors call "referred pain" that you can do something about with exercise.

The pain is pain is "referred" — or passed down the line — from another muscle or tendon.

"With referred pain, the area where the symptoms appear may not be the area that's injured or dysfunctional," says David Upton, an exercise physiologist in Fort Worth, Texas.

Here are seven common types of referred pains, and exercises and stretches that can fix them.

If these tips don't help within two weeks, however, see a doctor.

Upper Arm Ache

THE PAIN: The back of one (or both) of your upper arms frequently aches

FIX IT BY: Strengthening your rotator-cuff muscles.

Men with weak or injured rotator-cuff muscles — a common problem among inactive guys and those who exercise with sloppy form — often develop this pain as a result.

If your rotator-cuff muscles are weak, the more powerful deltoid (shoulder) muscles bear the brunt of stabilizing your upper arms, so your upper arms fatigue and ache.

THE EXERCISE: To train your problematic arm, grab a large can of soup (or a 3-pound dumbbell) and lie on the floor on your side, supporting your head on your other arm.

Keeping your elbow flush against your side, bend the sore arm at a 90-degree angle and, without straightening your elbow, rotate the upper arm outward to lift the soup can toward the ceiling. Lower the can to the starting position and repeat.

This external rotation strengthens your rotators — the infraspinatus and teres minor.

Do 15 repetitions per arm, every day.

See that hottie on your morning jog? Keep pace while you’re flirting—it might improve your odds. According to new research, faces in motion are hotter than stationary ones.

In the study, 20 subjects were asked to rate the attractiveness of various people while looking at either a two-second video clip or a static frame from the same clips. Overwhelmingly, the moving faces were rated as more attractive every time. On average, people rated 91 percent of the static shots as less flattering than the videos.

Some foods just aren't taken seriously.

Consider celery, for example—forever the garnish, never the main meal. You might even downgrade it to bar fare, since the only stalks most guys eat are served alongside hot wings or immersed in Bloody Marys.

All of which is a shame, really. Besides being a perfect vehicle for peanut butter, this vegetable contains bone-beneficial silicon and cancer-fighting phenolic acids. And those aren't even what makes celery so good for you.

You see, celery is just one of six underappreciated and undereaten foods that can instantly improve your diet. Make a place for them on your plate, and you'll gain a new respect for the health benefits they bestow—from lowering blood pressure to fighting belly fat. And the best part? You'll discover just how delicious health food can be.
